Hola Oak Street!
It is a hot time in Mexico but we are doing extremely well! Everyone is feeling fine and working very hard.
What a perfect team you sent to work with the Yucatecan people. Each day we meet for breakfast at the Church in Tekax and have our devotion together. After breakfast the work crew heads over to Oxkutzcab, about 15 miles, to work on the foundation for the church. The building will be the same dimensions as the one in Ticum, about 15 feet across and 40 feet long, with a children’s classroom and bathrooms. It is located a few blocks from town and on a corner lot. It is in a area we had not worked before, so we are reaching out to even more people.
The crew worked until about 1:00 p.m. digging ditches down to solid rock, cutting out tree stumps and moving rocks. Today there is a crew of professionals on site from the church, beginning to lay the foundation by filling the ditches back up with the rock and pouring cement over it. We think that part will be done today and be ready to begin laying blocks on Friday.
Stan Scibek has led the other part of the team to walk down to the orphanage we worked on last year and paint the inner walls. They are having a great time and look like there is as much paint on them as on the building. They have accomplished a lot in a couple days, and the orphanage should be able to open in the near future.
Lunch is always ready and delicious around 2:00 p.m. Everyone tries to get a siesta and maybe a shower before the evening activities.
Each day at around 4:30 (remember we are in Mexico) we head over for Akil (halfway to Oxkutzcab) where we have VBS with a group of as many as 50 kids in a small Presbyterian mission church. It goes very well each evening as all the team members pitch in to do whatever needs to be done. Next we go to a park in Oxkutzcab, which is a few blocks from the building site. We have played basketball and soccer, Chris leads his new Yucatecan band with Sierra and Jordan singing backup — pretty good we must admit.
The VBS team gets all the kids together in a nearby play area and does a scaled down version of VBS as the preaching begins. Two nights in a row there have been seven adults and as many children saved. The youth are scattering all around the park and communicating the Gospel in any way possible. They are doing a wonderful job and making a huge impact.
We plan to have the crusade at least Thursday night and possibly Friday but since we depart from Tekax early Saturday morning for Chichen Itsa, we may need to get packed the night before.
Please pray that each person will stay healthy and strong and be able to rest. Also, that we will be bold and that God will communicate by His Holy Spirit since we have only 2 real interpreters.
God bless you Oak street for the difference you are making. The people here remember those who have come in the past and send their greetings and their love.
